looks like there wont be free wireless for Chicago after all.
CHICAGO, Illinois (AP) – An ambitious plan to blanket the city with wireless broadband Internet will be shelved because it is too costly and too few residents would use it, Chicago officials said Tuesday.
Chicago officials say they won’t go ahead with plan to blanket the 228 square mile city with wireless Internet.
“We realized — after much consideration — that we needed to reevaluate our approach to provide universal and affordable access to high speed Internet as part of the city’s broader digital inclusion efforts,” Chicago’s chief information officer, Hardik Bhatt, said in a statement.
The plan to blanket Chicago’s 228 square miles with wireless Internet access was announced early last year when Chicago leaders said they hoped to become one of the largest cities to offer all-over access to the Web.
Instead, the city said its negotiations with private-sector partners, including EarthLink Inc., have stalled because any citywide Wi-Fi would require massive public financing. The city had hoped to provide only infrastructure for the network.
Tuesday’s announcement makes Chicago the latest in a string of municipalities to encounter troubles with their municipal broadband initiatives because of ballooning budgets and dwindling usage that’s led to scant revenue generated by the projects. About 175 U.S. cities or regions have citywide or partial systems.
It seems personal defense/protection tools are being designed with more appealing looks. Straying away from what looks like a military grade weapon, these come in attractive colors that and designed to look less threatening. One of them is a commercial grade tazer called the Taser C2. It looks like an electric shaver albeit with the capacity to drop assailants like flies. It has some interesting features such as a plastic cover to prevent from accidental firing and has a flashlight and lasersight fixtures built in! Give me one in pink please!
The next personal defense tool is the Avurt IM5. It launches these powder pellets from up to 40 feet away that causes a intense burning sensation in the nose, eyes, and throat to the individual. This device has a laser-sight fixture built in it too and looks like a person can shoot multiple rounds and the oncomers. It lis small and compact, you just have to see it for yourself.

WASHINGTON - Toy-maker Fisher-Price is recalling 83 types of toys — including the popular Big Bird, Elmo, Dora and Diego characters — because their paint contains excessive amounts of lead.
The worldwide recall being announced Thursday involves 967,000 plastic preschool toys made by a Chinese vendor and sold in the United States between May and August. It is the latest in a wave of recalls that has heightened global concern about the safety of Chinese-made products.
The recall is the first for Fisher-Price Inc. and parent company Mattel Inc. involving lead paint. It is the largest for Mattel since 1998 when Fisher-Price had to yank about 10 million Power Wheels from toy stores. Read more
